Sharon, GA – Taliaferro County – Church of the Purification is Georgia’s oldest Catholic Church, dating back to 1790. The ancestors of famous authors Margaret Mitchell and Flannery O’Connor worshiped here, as well as Alexander Stephens. I was surprised to learn that the first Catholic church in Georgia was established here, and not in Savannah!
Athens, GA – Clarke County – The history of the family at this antebellum Athens mansion s just amazing. Built circa 1849 for Howell and Mary Ann Lamar Cobb, this served as their home throughout a storied political career.
Milledgeville, GA – Baldwin County – I love to walk around Milledgeville, the antebellum capital of Georgia. So many beautiful old homes in the area. I had to stop and admire this 1818 house – and it turns out this house has been moved 4 times in Milledgeville!
Newnan, GA – Coweta County – Built circa 1836, the Jones-Cranford-Walker-Solle House is on the National Register of Historic Places, as part of the Greenville St/LaGrange St Historic District in Newnan.
Anderson, SC – While I was in Anderson not long ago, I had to go and check out the Dr. Samuel Orr House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The more I learned about Dr. Orr and family, I was amazed at the accomplishments of this family!
